6. DAVID MUSE

Did you know a black woman wrote The Matrix?  She responded to an ad from the Wachowski brothers soliciting sci-fi manuscripts in the 80s.  Years later, The Terminator & The Matrix gratuitously bit her brilliant writing.  Her name is Sophia Stewart and she sued those shameful Wachowski brothers and won.

This was one of many interesting tidbits from David Muse, a sales clerk at Idle Time books in D.C.  A fellow Octavia Butler fan, he talked about wanting to visit the places Butler sets her stories in.  Like when I was reading Parable of the Sower and wanted to make the same stops along the 101 that Lauren Olamina’s crew did.  David agreed to create a U.S. map of places referred to in Octavia Butler novels, kind of like a science fiction fan’s travel guide.  A worthy undertaking that I know will be gratefully received by Butler fans everywhere. I for one am watching for it, David.  Can’t wait!

David’s recommendations for nutrients: Aside from Idle Time books, also must check Second Story Books in D.C., Wax N’Facts in Georgia, and the writings of his extraordinary sister/author Daphne Muse.

5. BARDIA FERDOUSI

A Persian who puts out a mean crawfish etouffe.  Bardia Ferdousi left his homeland Persia for Baton Rouge, Louisiana. When we walked into his tiny crowded restaurant Bardia’s, he was playing host, taking orders, AND bussing tables.  He’s a graduate of civil engineering, but with no jobs for that he turned to the other thing he knew how to do - cook.  Now he works his butt off at Bardia’s and is well-loved by many D.C. regulars.  Bardia pointed out an old white lady sitting by the specials board that could YAP. He said he bought her a zipper for Christmas.

My order: Coffee with chicory and steamed milk. Beignets, split 3 ways. Alligator gumbo* with homemade biscuit.  Friends’ orders that I ate from: Oyster po-boy, Crawfish etouffe, Crab & corn Chowder.

Alligator is a seasonal meat. According to Bardio, they’re easier to catch in the winter, when they stay in the water as opposed to roaming the land. Up to this point, I always thought of seasonal items as fruits and vegetables, but never meat.  I gave thanks to the river, the alligator, the hunter, the butcher and the chef, and all the life and love that went into the gumbo.

Handling biz before I head south. And sharing 1 way to appeal a BART Ticket:
“BART and it’s Police Department did not bring justice to the brutal murder of young Oscar Grant. Why was Marysol Domenici re-hired even though ample evidence shows she lied under oath about what happened during Oscar’s murder?  Do you think it’s fair to ask people to give money to BART for citations when BART fails to hold itself accountable for it’s own major violations? Please see photo evidence.”
